Most people have heard of Twitter, so you are probably one of them, although you may not be exactly sure what it is. Twitter is a social media and blogging network, which is one of the fastest growing sites in the world. It allows you to post mini-blogs of up to 140 characters, which translates to a couple of sentences. One of the many uses of Twitter is as a marketing tool for businesses. Twitter is an attractive option because it is simple to use and you can create an account free of charge.
Do not rush into starting marketing your business. The first thing you need to decide is exactly how you want to use Twitter. Do you want to use it to attract a certain number of potential customers to your site each week? Do you want to use Twitter as a form of sales flier or build up your relationship with repeat customers? You may want to use Twitter for some or all of these functions. Whatever you decide, you need to clarify your goals in order to know what steps you must take.
Do not send dozens of postings a day with links to your website or informing followers of sales or deals. People are tired of being inundated with advertisements, so if you start doing it to them, they will just stop following your postings, also known as tweets. You have to make people want to follow your tweeting by providing them with interesting snippets, including jokes and quotes.
Do not act unprofessionally. You are using Twitter to build your customer base, which means that every post you tweet represents your company. You would not ignore customers who telephone your business, so do not ignore followers who send personal messages. If a follower leaves a negative tweet about your business or services on your account, then do not curse the person out or act rude. It reflects badly on you and your business. Instead, ask the poster exactly what the problem was and how you can improve your products or service in the future. People are impressed when they see a business, which cares about its customers and take the time to fix any problems or dissatisfaction.
Do not give up if you do not have a response right away. Like almost anything else worth doing, twittering for your business takes time. You have to post consistently or your followers will lose interest. As stated, you do not need to, and should not, post hundreds of tweets per day; however, you do need to tweet often enough so you are a persistent presence for your followers.
